Distribution

Investments in infrastructure and by industries are tremendous in China. Arriving in Beijing, Shanghai or Canton can be a shock for a first time comer, seeing cities in full scale transformation, infrastructure under construction everywhere and modern industrial parks surrounding the cities. But it is equally fascinating, even for frequent visitors, to see that this trend is followed by any single large city in China, even in the central and western parts of the country.
This huge market for industrial products and equipment benefits first the local industries. Not only the purely Chinese invested, but also the sino-foreign Joint-Ventures (JV) and the Wholly Foreign Owned Entreprises (WFOE).
Imports are also benefiting, when they keep a differentiating advantage.
OEM partnership can be a strong leverage on the market, combining the advantage of foreign technology and local low cost of production, assembly and support.

Industrial products, equipment :
On the markets of equipments and industrial products, the image of imported goods remains positive and a potential strong leverage. End-users and distributors are eager to learn about features of foreign innovative and superior offer.

But the Chinese competition is building up. And in most markets, foreign offer is readily available with some kind of local structure to support the sales and the after sales.

Entering the market is not easy and requires strong and stable partnership with local operators in the trade. Finding them and convincing them is the key.

Several types of business model can be evaluated and compared. Direct export to China of complete products might not be the most cost efficient. Having a part of integration in China, with local sourcing for non technologically-sensitive part can offer a much better model : lower freight costs, lower cost of production, set up of technical team in China able to handle as well the supporting functions.

Strengthening and monitoring distribution network :
While foreign manufacturers consider China market with a long term view and hope to build stable partnerships, many local Chinese distributors have a much more dynamic view with less long term vision and more opportunity catching tactics. This is understandable as the result of the fast development of the economy in China.
Relations with distributors need to be monitored carefully, keeping in mind that things can change fast. This situation can be turned into a positive factor for development if it can be used actively to catch new opportunities.

Monitoring a distributor from a remote location such as HQ in foreign country is difficult. And almost impossible task if it is a pool of several distributors.

A local support team, which is perceived as a local presence of the company, can help dramatically in understanding the situations, finding the right actions for improvement and building higher motivation among the distributors.
