Project brief
Knowing precisely the features and specific requirements of the product is obviously essential. It includes not only design, specifications or materials, but also supply arrangement (will the foreign customer supply some components or materials ? ), packaging, labeling, export packing, quantities in total and per batch of product, schedule requirements, shipping arrangement,…
Nothing complicated here, just a check list of information which must be filled. But the distance to the Chinese supplier means that only such an exhaustive preparation can secure that the discussion onsite will communicate clearly and precisely your expectation. Absence of such preparation would lead to frustration on both side, with misunderstandings and repeat work.

Search and selection of supplier

Back up alternative
All discussions between supplier and customer will mention that each party is willing to enter into a long term relationship. Foreign party may mean it really as the China sourcing can be a part of their long term plan. Chinese party may mean it in a different way : “we are open to long term relationship, as long as it makes economic sense, in comparison to other business opportunities we may find on the way”.
In a fast changing business environment, Chinese suppliers have to be flexible and open to adaptation.
Our experience is that change in a relationship can occur anytime, even when we see from the perspective of the foreign party that the deals are running smoothly.
Securing back up alternative or spreading orders on a pool of supplier can be a safer approach.
